Did you come across the BitLocker blue screen, and are having trouble finding your BitLocker recovery key? In this tutorial, you will learn what BitLocker is, and you will discover different ways you can locate your recovery key using a Microsoft Account.
What Is BitLocker?
First available on Windows Vista, BitLocker is a Windows feature that helps you protect your data from unauthorized access. BitLocker works by scrambling all the data on your storage drive into an encrypted clutter of data that can only be accessed with a recovery key. There are two types of BitLocker: Device encryption and drive encryption.
Since Windows 8.1, BitLocker device encryption is available and turned on by default for all Home or Pro devices capable of Modern Standby. When you first sign into or set up an eligible PC with a Microsoft account, BitLocker will automatically create your recovery key and attach it to your account.
Locate Your BitLocker Recovery Key Using Microsoft Account
The easiest way you can find out your BitLocker recovery key is by accessing your Microsoft account. Here’s how to do so:
Personal Microsoft Account
- First, go to support.microsoft.com, and sign into your Microsoft account.
- Click your profile icon on the top-right corner, then click My Microsoft account.
- Next, click All devices and look for the name of your PC (if you’re not sure what your PC’s name is, click Win + Pause Break to find your device name).
- Once you find your PC’s name, select Manage.
- Go to Security and protection, then click View Bitlocker keys to find your BitLocker recovery key.
Work/School Microsoft Account
- Go to aka.ms/AADRecoveryKey, then sign into your work or school account.
- Once you’re signed in, you’ll see your recovery key displayed next to your PC’s name.
If you do not see a link that says, Get BitLocker keys, contact your work or school help desk to gain access to your recovery key.
Microsoft Intune Account
If you are using a Microsoft Intune (formally Endpoint) account, use these steps to locate your BitLocker recovery key:
- First, go to intune.microsoft.com, then sign into your account.
- Once you’re signed in, go to Devices
- Select All devices, and look for the name of the PC that you’re using.
- Under the Monitor section, click Recovery keys
- Select the Copy to Clipboard button and paste the data to view the BitLocker recovery key.
